The Blue Mountains sit 81km west of Sydney, yet most Sydneysiders visit only Echo Point and call it done. That’s a waste. This guide gives you a complete 2-day itinerary — with checklists, real costs, driving distances and rainy-day alternatives — so you can actually make the most of the trip.

TL;DR: Drive or catch the train to Katoomba, spend Day 1 in the central Blue Mountains (Three Sisters, Scenic World, Grand Canyon Track), Day 2 exploring Wentworth Falls, Leura and Blackheath. Budget A$250–A$380 for two people all-in for the weekend.

Getting There

Train vs. Driving

OptionTravel TimeCostBest For

Drive via Great Western Highway1 hour 20 minFuel + parkingFamilies, hikers with gear
Drive via Bells Line of Road1 hour 50 minFuelScenic approach, stops at Bilpin

Trains run every 30–60 minutes from Sydney Central. The Blue Mountains Line terminates at Lithgow, stopping at Springwood, Leura, Katoomba, Blackheath and Mount Victoria along the way.

Parking in Katoomba: Echo Point car park is free but fills by 10am on weekends. Arrive before 9am or park on Lurline Street (2-hour limit) and walk 10 minutes. Scenic World has a paid car park — A$10 per day.

Pre-Trip Checklist

  • Book accommodation at least 2 weeks ahead (weekends fill fast)
  • Check weather — the mountains are 5–8°C colder than Sydney, year-round
  • Pack layers, rain jacket and proper walking shoes (not thongs)
  • Download the AllTrails app — Blue Mountains tracks are well-mapped
  • If visiting Jenolan Caves, book cave tours online at jenolancaves.org.au (A$40–A$60 per adult)
  • Fill water bottles — some trail sections have no water sources
  • Compare travel insurance if you’re doing any Grade 4–5 walks
  • Find accommodation in Katoomba or Leura — the village feel is worth the 15-minute walk difference

Day 1: Katoomba and the Central Blue Mountains

Morning: Echo Point and the Three Sisters (8:00am–10:30am)

Arrive at Echo Point before 9am. You’ll have the lookout almost entirely to yourself and the light on the Three Sisters is best before 10am. The Three Sisters — 922m, 918m and 906m high — are the range’s most photographed formation, but the real view is the full 270-degree panorama of the Jamison Valley dropping away below you.

Three Sisters checklist:

  • Walk the full Echo Point lookout circuit (15 minutes, paved, easy)
  • Take the Giant Stairway down to the valley floor (300 steps — steep, not for those with bad knees)
  • Cross the swing bridge at the base for valley-floor views
  • Return via the Federal Pass trail to Scenic World (40 minutes, Grade 3)

Entry to Echo Point: Free.

Mid-Morning: Scenic World (10:30am–12:30pm)

Scenic World sits 500m from Echo Point and is genuinely worth the ticket price. Four experiences are included in one pass:

  • Scenic Railway: World’s steepest passenger railway, 52-degree incline. Ride it down to the valley floor.
  • Scenic Walkway: 2.4km boardwalk through ancient temperate rainforest. Flat, wheelchair accessible. Takes 45 minutes at a stroll.
  • Scenic Cableway: Glassed-floor gondola up from the valley. Spectacular.
  • Scenic Skyway: 270m above the valley floor, crosses above Katoomba Falls. Opens at 10am.

Adult pass: A$47. Child (4–13): A$25. Family (2 adults + 2 children): A$119.

Scenic World checklist:

  • Ride the Railway down first — sets the scene
  • Walk the full boardwalk (don’t rush it)
  • Take the Cableway back up
  • Do the Skyway last — watch for vertigo if you’re sensitive to heights

Lunch: Katoomba Street (12:30pm–1:30pm)

Katoomba’s main strip has improved dramatically in recent years.

  • Katoomba Falls Kiosk — sandwiches and coffee, A$12–A$16, right next to the falls
  • Yellow Deli (Seven Day Adventist community cafe) — hearty sandwiches and soups, A$14–A$18
  • Hominy Bakery — best pies and pastries in the mountains, queue expected on weekends, A$8–A$12
  • Arjuna — Indian and vegetarian, A$18–A$25 for mains, good for non-meat eaters

Afternoon: Grand Canyon Track (1:30pm–5:00pm)

The Grand Canyon Track at Blackheath (25 minutes north by car, or 2 stops on the train) is one of NSW’s best short walks. Ignore the name — this isn’t Arizona. It’s a lush, ferny slot canyon carved into the Blackmans Plateau, with waterfalls, rock overhangs and complete quiet.

Distance: 6.3km loop
Time: 2.5–3 hours
Grade: Moderate (Grade 3) — uneven steps, some narrow sections
Start: Evans Lookout Road, Blackheath (free parking)

Grand Canyon Track checklist:

  • Start at Evans Lookout Road trailhead (not Neates Glen end)
  • Take the anticlockwise loop for the best waterfall approach
  • Bring a snack — no facilities on trail
  • Allow extra time — most people underestimate this walk
  • After the walk, drive 2 minutes to Govetts Leap Lookout (best viewpoint in the entire Blue Mountains, free)

Evening: Stay in Katoomba or Leura

Katoomba is more walkable, has more restaurants and is cheaper. Leura is quieter, more upmarket and has better gardens.

Find accommodation in the Blue Mountains and compare options across the range.

Dinner: Silks Brasserie in Leura (A$35–A$55 mains, book ahead) or the Carrington Hotel dining room (A$28–A$42, walk-ins usually fine).

Day 2: Wentworth Falls, Leura and Jenolan Caves Option

Morning: Wentworth Falls (9:00am–11:30am)

Wentworth Falls is the Blue Mountains’ most spectacular waterfall system — 187 metres total drop, three tiers, visible from both the top (easy walk) and the valley floor (serious hike).

The quick option (1.5 hours):

  • National Pass lookout walk from Conservation Hut car park
  • Views of the full falls, Valley of the Waters gorge, and Jamison Valley
  • Grade 3, 5.5km return

The full option (3–4 hours):

  • Valley of the Waters circuit
  • Descends to the bottom of Wentworth Falls via steep steel stairs
  • Grade 5 — only do this if you’re fit and have proper footwear

Wentworth Falls checklist:

  • Park at Conservation Hut car park (free, off Fletcher Street)
  • Grab a coffee at the Conservation Hut café before the walk
  • Do at least the lookout section — the drop is genuinely impressive
  • Look for lyrebirds in the gully below — commonly seen between 9am and 11am

Mid-Morning: Leura Village (11:30am–1:00pm)

Leura is 10 minutes east of Katoomba on the highway. The main street (Leura Mall) has good coffee, antique shops, a great bookshop (Leura Book Barn) and the famous Candy Store.

Leura checklist:

  • Coffee at Josophan’s Fine Chocolates or The Lookout
  • Browse the Leura Book Barn (secondhand, excellent travel and nature section)
  • Walk Leura Cascades — 5-minute flat walk from the car park, a gentle waterfall

Optional: Jenolan Caves Day Trip (Full Day Detour)

Jenolan Caves sit 62km south-west of Katoomba (1 hour drive) and are among the most impressive limestone cave systems in Australia. If you want to add this, drop the Wentworth Falls afternoon loop and head south after lunch.

Chifley Cave tour (most popular): 1.5 hours, A$44 adult
Imperial Cave (easier, no steps): A$44 adult
Adventure caving (Lucas Cave abseiling, crawling): A$125 adult — book ahead

Jenolan Caves checklist:

  • Book online at jenolancaves.org.au (weekend tours sell out)
  • Arrive 30 minutes before your tour — the car park is lower than the cave entry
  • Wear closed-toe shoes — cave floors are slippery
  • Allow 30 minutes each way on the winding road from Katoomba
  • Consider staying overnight at Jenolan Caves House (A$180–A$280) if doing a second cave tour

What To Do If It Rains

The Blue Mountains in rain are actually beautiful — mist fills the valley, waterfalls run harder, and the ferns glow. But some tracks become slippery.

Wet-weather checklist:

  • Scenic World is fully covered — still operates in rain (check winds close Skyway)
  • Echo Point lookout — still worth it, misty views are dramatic
  • Blue Mountains Heritage Centre at Blackheath — free, good maps and displays
  • Katoomba Fine Art gallery — free to browse
  • Megapass Cinema in Katoomba — old-school cinema, A$15 tickets
  • Jenolan Caves — fully underground, rain is irrelevant

What to Pack

  • Layers (thermals useful Oct–May, essential June–September)
  • Waterproof jacket — it rains without warning
  • Walking shoes with grip (ankle support for Grade 4+ walks)
  • Sunscreen — higher altitude means stronger UV
  • 2L+ water per person per walk
  • Snacks — trail mix, muesli bars
  • Cash (some Katoomba cafes are cash-only)
  • Fully charged phone for AllTrails navigation
