The Central Coast sits between Sydney (1 hour south) and Newcastle (1 hour north) and gets overlooked by both cities. It has 40+ beaches, two national parks, a lake system that covers 110 square kilometres, and half the prices of the northern beaches. This guide covers the whole stretch from Gosford to the lake.
TL;DR: Day trippers from Sydney head to Terrigal. Weekenders who know what they’re doing go to Bouddi National Park, Avoca Beach or the northern lake towns. Budget A$130–A$220/night for accommodation.
Getting There
By Train (The Easy Option)
Central to Gosford: 1 hour, A$7.28 each way (Opal)
Central to Wyong (via Gosford): 1 hour 20 minutes
Trains run every 30–60 minutes. From Gosford or Wyong, you’ll need a bus or Uber to reach the beaches — the train stations are inland.
Driving
Sydney to Terrigal: 1 hour 20 minutes (93km) via the M1
Sydney to Bouddi NP (Putty Beach entrance): 1 hour 30 minutes (105km)

Bouddi National Park: Full Checklist
Bouddi National Park is the best kept secret on the Central Coast. It covers 17km of headlands, beaches and bushland between Gosford and Terrigal, and has some of the least-visited swimming beaches in the region.
Access: Main entry points at Putty Beach (Killcare Heights Road), MacMasters Beach, or the Maitland Bay Track from Bouddi Road.
Walks Checklist
- Maitland Bay Track (3km return, 1.5 hours, Grade 3) — descends to a remote crescent beach with clear water, no facilities and rarely more than a dozen people. Start from the Bouddi Road car park.
- Little Beach Track (1.5km return, 45 minutes, easy) — short walk to a pristine sheltered beach. Good for families.
- Putty Beach to Tallow Beach circuit (7km, 3 hours, Grade 3) — the full Bouddi circuit. Passes all three main beaches and Maitland Bay lookout.
- Bombi Moor Track (2km return, 1 hour, easy) — excellent birdwatching, views over Brisbane Water from the headland
Beaches Checklist

- Little Beach — calm water, good swimming for children, very sheltered
- Tallow Beach — accessible from Lobster Beach via a short walk. Rarely visited.
Terrigal: The Central Coast’s Most-Visited Beach Town
Terrigal is where most people default to on the Central Coast — and it’s popular for good reason. The main beach is patrolled, the Haven is a beautiful sheltered swimming spot, and the town has decent cafes and restaurants.
The Haven: A small sheltered bay on the southern end of Terrigal Beach. Calm water, rockpool, good for non-swimmers and snorkellers. Cafe at the car park (A$14–A$22 for lunch).
Terrigal Surf Lessons:
- Let’s Go Surfing Terrigal: group lessons A$65 per person, 2 hours. beginnersurf.com.au

- The Skillion lookout: 70m headland above the ocean, short steep walk (10 minutes), spectacular views

The Entrance: Pelican Town Checklist
The Entrance sits at the mouth of Tuggerah Lake, a 108 square kilometre lake system that connects to the ocean through a narrow channel.
The famous pelican feeding: Every day at 3:30pm, a crowd gathers on the waterfront at Memorial Park. Rangers feed up to 200 Australian pelicans — the largest pelicans in the world. Free, genuinely spectacular, don’t miss it.
- Arrive at Memorial Park by 3:15pm to get a good spot
- Pelican feeding: 3:30pm sharp, rain or shine (cancelled in extreme weather)
- Bring a camera — the pelicans come within 2 metres of visitors

Copacabana and MacMasters Beach (Hidden Spots)
Two minutes south of Avoca, these two beaches are almost completely unknown to visitors.
- Copacabana Beach — 400m of sheltered bay, patrolled in summer, rarely crowded. Excellent swimming.
- MacMasters Beach — quiet lagoon, beach cafe, Bouddi NP access from the north. Beautiful.
- Mimosa Cafe (MacMasters Beach) — excellent breakfast and lunch, A$18–A$28. Opens 7:30am.
Brisbane Water National Park and Aboriginal Engravings
Brisbane Water National Park is most people’s overlooked option on the Central Coast — they go to Bouddi instead. But it has something Bouddi doesn’t: the Bulgandry Aboriginal Engraving Site.
Bulgandry Aboriginal Engraving Site:
