International Trips from India Under ₹1 Lakh: Winter 2026

An international trip under ₹1 lakh is still realistic from India in winter 2026—but not for every destination, departure city or date. The budget works best for 4–7 nights in nearby countries, with economy flights, a shared room, local food and a selective activity plan. It becomes much harder during 20 December–3 January, when both flights and hotels can jump.

The ranges below are planning estimates per person, assuming two adults share a room. They are not live quotes. Always recheck flights, visa rules and the final card charge before booking.

Six trips that can fit the budget

DestinationIdeal tripPlanning totalMain budget risk
Nepal5–7 nights₹28,000–₹58,000Mountain flights and premium stays
Sri Lanka6–7 nights₹48,000–₹82,000Private car for the whole route
Thailand5–6 nights₹55,000–₹92,000Christmas-week beach hotels
Vietnam6–7 nights₹58,000–₹94,000Covering north and south together
Cambodia5 nights₹48,000–₹78,000Too many internal transfers
Malaysia5–6 nights₹52,000–₹88,000Adding islands at peak dates

These budgets deliberately leave some room below ₹1 lakh. A plan that totals ₹99,500 before baggage, insurance and airport transfers is not really under budget.

1. Nepal: the easiest budget win

Nepal is the strongest choice when the goal is an international break without spending half the budget on flights and paperwork. Kathmandu plus Pokhara works in six nights. Add Chitwan only if you have eight nights; otherwise the road time starts to dominate.

Indian nationals do not need a visa for Nepal. For air travel, the Embassy of India in Kathmandu says the accepted documents are a valid Indian passport or an original Election Commission voter ID; Aadhaar, PAN cards and driving licences are not accepted for this purpose. Check the official document guidance before departure.

Example six-night budget:

ItemWorking range
Return travel from Delhi₹10,000–₹20,000
Shared accommodation₹7,000–₹14,000
Food and local transport₹7,000–₹12,000
Activities and buffer₹4,000–₹12,000
Total₹28,000–₹58,000

2. Sri Lanka: the best balanced one-week route

Sri Lanka combines beaches, hill country, wildlife and historic towns within a compact trip. The mistake is trying to do Colombo, Sigiriya, Kandy, Ella, Yala and the south coast in seven days. Choose one of two routes: cultural triangle plus Kandy, or hill country plus the south coast.

Our Sri Lanka guide from India explains route trade-offs. Before paying, verify the current authorisation process on Sri Lanka’s official immigration website because entry rules and fees can change.

Keep it under budget: use trains or selected transfers rather than hiring a private driver for every day, and compare current flight prices from Chennai, Bengaluru, Kochi and Mumbai—not only your home airport.

3. Thailand: affordable outside the holiday spike

Thailand can fit under ₹1 lakh when you choose Bangkok plus one second stop. Bangkok and Krabi, or Bangkok and Chiang Mai, are coherent six-night trips. Bangkok, Phuket, Krabi and Chiang Mai in the same week is a baggage-fee collection disguised as an itinerary.

Use the Thailand planning guide for current route ideas, then confirm entry rules with the Royal Thai Embassy or Thailand’s official e-visa service for your travel date. Do not rely on an old social post: visa-exemption policies have changed repeatedly.

Reserve paid experiences after flights and hotels. Klook and Viator are useful for comparing the real cost of island trips and transfers, but a packed activity list can add ₹15,000–₹25,000 quickly.

4. Vietnam: choose north or south

Vietnam offers excellent value on the ground, but a cheap daily budget can be cancelled by unnecessary domestic flights. For six or seven nights, choose Hanoi with Ninh Bình and Hạ Long Bay, or Ho Chi Minh City with the Mekong Delta. Save the full north-to-south route for a longer trip.

Vietnam’s Immigration Department says its e-visa can be valid for up to 90 days, single or multiple entry, and directs travellers to its current official portals. Apply only through Vietnam’s official e-visa site, enter passport details carefully and print the approval.

Read the 7-day Vietnam itinerary from India, then compare flights before deciding which region is genuinely cheaper from your city.

5. Cambodia: a focused five-day cultural trip

Cambodia is good value when Angkor is the purpose of the trip. Spend three or four nights in Siem Reap; add Phnom Penh only if the flight routing works. The Angkor pass is a meaningful fixed cost, so budget it before accommodation upgrades.

Our Cambodia guide from India includes a five-day structure. Apply through the official Cambodian e-visa website or verify the current arrival process with the Cambodian government; avoid search ads using near-identical domains.

Conversion check: if a one-stop fare to Siem Reap is much higher than Phnom Penh, compare the total cost and time of the overland transfer before choosing the “cheaper” airport.

6. Malaysia: easiest as Kuala Lumpur plus one side trip

Kuala Lumpur works well with Melaka, Penang or a short nature stop. Adding Langkawi can still fit under ₹1 lakh, but holiday-week resort prices and another flight narrow the margin. A city-and-food itinerary is the safer budget version.

Check entry requirements with Malaysia’s official immigration channels shortly before departure, including any digital arrival form. For activities, build a shortlist on Klook but do not pre-book every day; KL also has plenty of low-cost neighbourhoods, parks and food markets.

A realistic ₹1 lakh budget template

Use this before choosing a country:

CostTarget cap
Return international flight₹32,000
Shared room, 6 nights₹18,000
Visa or entry authorisation₹5,000
Food₹10,000
Local and intercity transport₹10,000
Activities₹10,000
eSIM and insurance₹3,000
Contingency₹7,000
Working total₹95,000

If the flight is already ₹45,000, something else must change: shorten the trip, change the destination, move the dates or accept that the honest budget is above ₹1 lakh.

Costs people forget

  • Checked baggage on low-cost airlines
  • Airport-to-city transfers at both ends
  • Card foreign-exchange markup and ATM fees
  • City taxes or resort fees collected at the hotel
  • Intercity luggage charges and seat selection
  • Insurance exclusions for scooters or adventure activities
  • A usable data plan—compare an Airalo India departure eSIM with local SIM pricing

Use the forex calculator and add a 7–10% contingency instead of treating the cheapest search result as the final cost.

When not to force the ₹1 lakh target

Do not force the cap by booking a self-transfer with an unsafe connection, removing travel insurance, or choosing a hotel that creates hours of daily commuting. Also avoid paying an unfamiliar visa intermediary merely because it appears above the official government result.

For late-December travel, Nepal is the most resilient budget option. For a balanced week, choose Sri Lanka. For beaches and nightlife, Thailand works best outside the peak festive dates. Choose Vietnam or Cambodia for food and culture, and Malaysia for an easy city-led itinerary.
