Sydney’s coastline covers 239 km. The national parks on both sides of the city mean a significant portion of that is accessible on foot — from fully sealed promenades to rough bush tracks that require navigation and a solid pair of shoes.

These 12 walks are the best the city has. They range from 1.5 km to 26 km and span every difficulty level. Each entry covers exactly what you need to know before you go.

The 12 Walks in Full

1. Bondi to Coogee Coastal Walk

Distance: 6 km one way
Time: 2–2.5 hours
Difficulty: Easy — sealed path throughout, some steps
Best season: Year-round. Summer for swimming stops; winter for no crowds
Transport: Bus 333 to Bondi Beach. Bus 372/373/374 from Coogee back to the city.

The benchmark Sydney coastal walk. Six kilometres of headlands, ocean pools, heritage cemeteries and surf beaches connected by a sealed path. The walk passes through Tamarama, Bronte, Clovelly and Gordons Bay.

What to bring checklist:

  • Sunscreen SPF 50+ (exposed clifftops throughout)
  • 1.5 L water (no reliable refill between Bronte and Coogee)
  • Swimmers if stopping at Bronte ocean pool or Gordons Bay
  • Opal card for return bus

Key stops:

  • Bondi Icebergs ocean pool (walk past the outside at no charge, or $10 to swim)
  • Tamarama Beach (100 m, most powerful surf per metre in Sydney)
  • Waverley Cemetery (sandstone headland, graves from 1877, free)
  • Gordons Bay underwater nature trail (snorkel gear required, no hire available)

2. Spit Bridge to Manly Scenic Walkway

Distance: 10 km one way
Time: 3.5–4 hours
Difficulty: Moderate — unpaved sections, some steep descents
Best season: April–October for cooler weather and drier paths
Transport: Bus 144 from Wynyard to Spit Bridge. Ferry from Manly Wharf back to Circular Quay ($9.20).

The longer, wilder counterpart to the Bondi to Coogee. The Spit to Manly route passes through Sydney Harbour National Park with no suburban interruptions for the first 7 km. It crosses 17 separate beaches and coves.

What to bring checklist:

  • Solid walking shoes — unpaved sections include loose sandstone
  • 2 L water minimum (no water points after Clontarf Beach)
  • Packed lunch — no cafés between Spit Bridge and Manly (last 3 km)
  • Insect repellent in warmer months

Key stops:

  • Clontarf Beach (4 km in — free BBQs, toilets, swimming)
  • Castle Rock Beach (5.5 km in — deserted harbour beach)
  • Reef Beach (7 km in — clothing optional, isolated)
  • Manly Lagoon viewpoint (9 km — freshwater lagoon from above)

3. Bondi to Bronte

Distance: 2.5 km one way
Time: 45 minutes
Difficulty: Easy — sealed path, accessible for all fitness levels
Best season: Year-round
Transport: Bus to Bondi. Bus 379 from Bronte.

The best short version of the Bondi to Coogee for people who want a taste without the full 6 km. Passes Tamarama (1.2 km) and ends at Bronte’s free ocean pool.

Checklist:

  • Start at the south end of Bondi Beach (not the Icebergs end)
  • Stop at Tamarama for 15 minutes — the bay is narrow and powerful
  • Swim at Bronte Baths ocean pool (free, no lifeguard)
  • Continue to Coogee if you have energy (additional 3.5 km)

4. Manly to Shelly Beach (Manly Foreshore)

Distance: 2 km return
Time: 45 minutes return
Difficulty: Easy — flat sealed path
Best season: Year-round
Transport: Ferry from Circular Quay to Manly Wharf ($9.20)

A 1 km sealed path along the southern Manly foreshore to Shelly Beach marine reserve. The return gives a different view. Most worthwhile in the morning before the crowds arrive at Shelly.

Checklist:

  • Arrive at Shelly before 10 am on weekends for a spot
  • Snorkel the marine reserve (bring gear — no hire available at Shelly)
  • Walk the headland path above Shelly for the return ocean view
  • Continue north from Manly along the Scenic Walkway if time allows

5. Hermitage Foreshore Track

Distance: 2 km one way (4 km return, or one-way with bus back)
Time: 45 minutes one way
Difficulty: Easy — some uneven surfaces
Best season: Year-round
Transport: Bus 325 to Bayview Hill Road (start). Walk to Nielsen Park then bus 325 back from Vaucluse.

Through Sydney Harbour National Park, this walk connects Hermitage Reserve (Vaucluse) to Nielsen Park with views of the Opera House and Harbour Bridge throughout. Passes Milk Beach (see Hidden Gems article for details).

Checklist:

  • Find Milk Beach 800 m into the walk (small sign, easy to miss)
  • Continue to Nielsen Park for a harbour swim (shark net enclosed, free)
  • Check the heritage tea house at Nielsen Park for lunch ($20–$30)

6. Clovelly to Gordons Bay

Distance: 1.5 km one way
Time: 30 minutes
Difficulty: Easy
Best season: Year-round
Transport: Bus from Coogee or Bondi Junction to Clovelly Road.

Short but distinctive — the path connects Clovelly’s concrete rock inlet to Gordons Bay’s underwater nature trail. Worth doing specifically to snorkel at Gordons Bay.

Checklist:

  • Swim at Clovelly first (flat water rock inlet, free)
  • Walk south to Gordons Bay (15 minutes)
  • Snorkel the underwater nature trail (marked with buoys, BYO gear)
  • Continue the 500 m further to Coogee for the full Coogee–Bondi experience

7. Balmoral to Taronga Zoo Foreshore

Distance: 3 km one way
Time: 1 hour
Difficulty: Easy-Moderate — some bush sections
Best season: Year-round
Transport: Bus 233 to Balmoral. Ferry from Taronga Zoo Wharf back to Circular Quay ($9.20).

Balmoral Beach to Taronga Zoo follows the Middle Harbour foreshore. You don’t need zoo entry to use the ferry wharf and enjoy the foreshore views.

Checklist:

  • Start at Edwards Beach, Balmoral (swim first if time allows)
  • Follow the foreshore path east and south toward Mosman Bay
  • Pick up the ferry at Taronga Zoo wharf for the return to the city

8. North Head Loop, Manly

Distance: 7 km loop
Time: 2.5–3 hours
Difficulty: Moderate — gravel paths, some unsealed terrain
Best season: Year-round. Wildflowers August–October.
Transport: Bus to Manly, walk 3 km to North Head. Or drive to the North Head Sanctuary car park.

North Head is the southern jaw of the entrance to Sydney Harbour. The loop covers the quarantine station (ANARE), the Memorial Cemetery (WWII), the ocean-side cliffs and the harbour entrance lookout at Fairfax Lookout.

Checklist:

  • Start at Fairfax Lookout (360-degree view of harbour entrance and Pacific Ocean)
  • Walk the Cobblers Beach access path (small beach inside North Head)
  • Take the East Escarpment Track along the ocean cliffs
  • Return via the Manly Dam access road (adds 1.5 km but avoids backtracking)

9. Kamay Botany Bay Coastal Walk

Distance: 5 km
Time: 1.5–2 hours
Difficulty: Easy
Best season: Year-round
Transport: Train to Cronulla, bus to Kurnell or La Perouse.

Where Cook first landed in 1770. The walk covers both headlands of Botany Bay with views of Sydney Airport runway approach, historic monuments and several small beaches. Bare Island Fort is the endpoint.

Checklist:

  • Start at Kurnell Discovery Centre (free entry, good heritage signage)
  • Walk the Coastal Track north along the Kurnell headland
  • Cross to La Perouse side for Bare Island Fort (free walk-around)
  • Check the Aboriginal cultural site markers on both headlands

10. Curracurrang Gorge, Royal National Park

Distance: 8 km return
Time: 3 hours
Difficulty: Moderate — loose rock sections, creek crossings
Best season: October–April
Transport: Drive or train to Otford station (entry to Royal NP from south). $17/vehicle park fee.

An 8 km return walk to Curracurrang Gorge — a deep sandstone gorge with a freshwater pool at the bottom. The gorge walls are 20 metres high. Combine with a swim in the gorge pool.

Checklist:

  • Wear closed shoes — the creek crossing near the gorge is slippery
  • Bring 2 L water minimum
  • Swimming gear for the gorge pool
  • Arrive before 10 am on summer weekends (car park fills by 10:30 am)

11. Bundeena to Marley Beach, Royal National Park

Distance: 10 km return
Time: 3.5–4 hours
Difficulty: Moderate-Hard — loose sand sections on clifftops
Best season: Year-round; wildflowers August–November
Transport: Train to Cronulla ($4.68 Opal), ferry to Bundeena ($6.90 return). $17/vehicle if driving to Bundeena.

The most wild coastal walk accessible from Sydney. The track from Bundeena leads south to Marley Beach through heathland, over sandstone headlands and past Aboriginal rock engravings. Marley Beach itself is a remote ocean beach — no facilities.

Checklist:

  • Catch the 7:15 am ferry from Cronulla for an early start
  • Apply insect repellent — march flies are aggressive October–March
  • Check surf conditions at Marley — swimming is unsupervised
  • Bring all food and 2.5 L water
  • Return ferry last service is 5:30 pm from Bundeena (check timetable)

12. Figure 8 Pools, Royal National Park

Distance: 8 km return
Time: 3.5–4 hours
Difficulty: Hard — boulder scrambling, cliff-edge sections
Best season: Low tide only — check tide chart before going
Transport: Drive to Burning Palms car park. $17/vehicle Royal NP entry.

The most famous walk in this list. The Figure 8 Pools are two natural rock pools carved into a headland, filled by ocean surge. The access requires boulder scrambling and is genuinely dangerous in high swell — people have been swept off here. Check the Royal National Park website for the Figure 8 Pools conditions report before going.

Checklist:

  • Check the Royal NP Figure 8 Pools conditions page day-before and morning-of
  • Go only on days marked LOW HAZARD or MODERATE — not HIGH or VERY HIGH
  • Wear shoes with grip — the boulders are wet throughout
  • Bring 2 L water and a packed lunch
  • Allow 4 hours total including photo time at the pools
  • Turn back if swell increases while you’re on the boulders

Walk Gear Checklist (Universal)

  • Sun protection: hat, SPF 50+, UV-protective shirt for long walks
  • Water: 1.5 L minimum for any walk over 3 km
  • Shoes: closed-toe with grip for any walk rated Moderate or above
  • Phone: downloaded offline maps via Google Maps or AllTrails
  • Emergency contact: tell someone where you’re going for Royal NP walks

Compare travel insurance before any national park hiking — it covers emergency helicopter evacuation if you get injured on harder walks.

Book a hire car with DiscoverCars for Royal National Park walks — public transport to Bundeena or Otford adds 90+ minutes each way.

Book tours and experiences if you want a guided walk with commentary — guided walks on the Spit to Manly run regularly and include Aboriginal cultural history.

Pair your walk with a Sydney beach day or find nearby accommodation.
