Sydney has a reputation for being expensive. The harbour, beaches and green spaces that make it one of the world’s most liveable cities are all completely free. So are most of the galleries, several major museums on specific days, and more coastal walking tracks than you can cover in a month.

Here are 35 free activities organised so you can plan a full weekend without spending anything — or use a few to pad out a trip you’ve already booked.

If you’re planning a full weekend, the AI trip planner can build a day-by-day route that strings these together with minimal backtracking.

Free Coastal Walks

All of these are free to walk, public access, and open every day.

  • Bondi to Coogee Coastal Walk — 6 km, 2–2.5 hours. Starts at the south end of Bondi Beach, passes Tamarama, Bronte, Clovelly and Gordons Bay. No hills above 50 metres. Bring water — no shops between Bronte and Coogee.
  • Manly to Shelly Beach foreshore — 1 km, 20 minutes each way. Flat, sealed path along the southern foreshore from Manly Wharf. The view of Shelly Beach headland is worth it alone.
  • Hermitage Foreshore Track — 2 km one way, 45 minutes. Through Sydney Harbour National Park from Vaucluse to Nielsen Park. Direct harbour views. Trail head at Bayview Hill Road, Vaucluse.
  • Balls Head Reserve Circuit — 3 km loop, 1 hour. Aboriginal rock engravings, sandstone headlands, unobstructed harbour view north toward Ryde. Five-minute walk from Waverton station.
  • Bare Island Fort walk, La Perouse — Free to walk around the outside. A 19th-century fortification on a small island connected to La Perouse by a footbridge. The beach here is one of Sydney’s cleanest ocean pools.

Free Museums and Galleries

  • Australian Museum, CBD — Free general admission every first Sunday of the month. Permanent collections include natural history, human evolution and Australian Indigenous cultures. 1 William Street; open 10 am–5 pm.
  • Museum of Contemporary Art (MCA), The Rocks — Free permanent collection, every day. Temporary exhibitions occasionally charge ($20–$25 but often free). Hours: 10 am–5 pm daily, Thursday until 9 pm.
  • Art Gallery of NSW, Domain — Free permanent collection, every day. Late-night Thursdays until 10 pm free entry. The Yiribana Gallery (Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander art) is consistently the best gallery in the building.
  • Object Space, Surry Hills — Free design museum. Small, 30-minute visit, excellent if you’re already in Surry Hills.
  • Justice & Police Museum, Circular Quay — Free entry Wednesday–Sunday 10 am–5 pm. Housed in a former police station. Mugshots and crime artefacts from colonial Sydney.
  • Susannah Place Museum, The Rocks — Free self-guided exterior tour. For the interior ($15 adult), book online. Six connected terrace houses from 1844.

Free Viewpoints

  • Mrs Macquaries Chair, Domain — A sandstone bench cut for Governor Macquarie’s wife in 1810. The view: Opera House, Harbour Bridge and Farm Cove from a single vantage point. Free. Open 24 hours. Busy at sunrise and sunset; visit mid-afternoon for no crowds.
  • Dudley Page Reserve, Dover Heights — Grassy clifftop park with views north to Manly and south to Botany Bay. Free parking on Marine Parade. Best at 5–6 pm in summer.
  • Pyrmont Bridge viewpoint, Darling Harbour — Walking across the oldest electrically operated swingspan bridge in the world costs nothing. Look north toward Barangaroo and south toward the Fish Market.
  • Taronga Zoo ferry ride — You don’t have to enter the zoo ($47 adult entry). The ferry ride from Circular Quay ($9.20 Opal one-way) and the view of the skyline from the Taronga wharf on the return is free-adjacent.
  • Observatory Hill, The Rocks — 45-metre sandstone hill, 3 minutes walk from the Rocks market. 360-degree view of the CBD, harbour and bridge. Free. The Observatory itself charges $27 for night sessions.

Free Markets

Markets are free to browse. Bring cash if you want to buy.
