Thailand Visa-Free: What Changed in 2026?

Thailand officially extended its visa-free arrangement for Indian passport holders from 30 days to 60 days per visit starting January 2025 โ€” and this policy was renewed for 2026. This is one of the most traveller-friendly policy decisions in recent Southeast Asian travel history.

Previously, Indians needed an e-Visa or a Tourist Visa from the Thai embassy. Now: land, show your passport, get stamped. No fee, no application, no embassy visit required.

Who Qualifies

  • Indian passport holders with an ordinary (blue) passport
  • Diplomatic and official passport holders have always had visa-free access
  • The policy covers entry by air โ€” land border entries follow slightly different rules (check current advisories)

What Documents You Need at the Border

Thai immigration officers are not lenient. Even with visa-free access, they can refuse entry if you don't have the right documents. Always carry:

  1. Valid Indian passport โ€” minimum 6 months validity beyond your stay
  2. Return/onward ticket โ€” this is strictly enforced. You must have a confirmed exit flight or bus booking out of Thailand.
  3. Proof of funds โ€” Thai immigration expects you to have approximately 10,000 THB per person (about โ‚น23,000โ€“โ‚น25,000). Carry cash or show a bank statement / screenshot of your account balance.
  4. Hotel booking confirmation โ€” at least for your first night. A printed or digital booking confirmation works.
  5. Completed arrival card (TM6) โ€” distributed on the flight. Fill it before you land.
Do NOT carry just a one-way ticket. This is the single biggest reason for Indian travellers being denied entry at Thai airports. The airline may not even let you board without a return ticket.

What NOT to Do

  • Don't arrive without a return ticket โ€” even if you genuinely plan to exit overland, border agents need to see something
  • Don't overstay โ€” Thai overstay fines are โ‚น500 THB per day, and repeated overstays lead to blacklisting
  • Don't say you're working โ€” tourist entry does not permit any form of employment. Digital nomads should note this carefully.
  • Don't bring restricted items โ€” e-cigarettes are illegal in Thailand and confiscations + fines are common at Thai customs

The 60-Day Stay: Extension Process

If you want to stay longer than 60 days, you can extend your visa-free stamp by a further 30 days at any Thai Immigration Bureau office for 1,900 THB (approximately โ‚น4,500).

Key immigration offices for tourists:

  • Bangkok: Chaeng Watthana Government Complex (open Monโ€“Fri 8:30amโ€“4:30pm)
  • Phuket: Phuket Immigration Office in Phuket City
  • Chiang Mai: Immigration office on Mahidol Road

Bring your passport, a passport photo, the extension form (available at the office), and the 1,900 THB fee in cash.

Common Rejection Reasons (and How to Avoid Them)

Rejection ReasonHow to Avoid
No return ticketAlways book a return flight or at least a cheap onward ticket
Insufficient fundsCarry min. 10,000 THB or show bank statement showing โ‚น25,000+
Too many visa-free entriesDon't do "visa runs" (leave and re-enter to reset the clock) โ€” Thai immigration tracks this
Suspicious travel patternHave a clear itinerary; avoid being vague about where you're staying
Working illegallyDon't mention remote work, meetings, or business activities at immigration
