When to Go
April to October is the reliable window. Temperatures sit at 22–27°C, rain is infrequent, humidity drops, and the beaches are swimmable without stinger concerns. June and July are the coolest months — still perfectly pleasant for walking and cycling, but you’ll want a layer at night.
July school holidays push accommodation prices up 30–40% coast-wide. Book six weeks ahead if you’re travelling then, especially for anything in Noosa.
November to March means heat (28–32°C), afternoon storms and higher humidity. The beaches remain beautiful and water temperatures are warm — just don’t plan outdoor itineraries that depend on consecutive clear afternoons.

Mooloolaba
The best all-round base. The Esplanade runs directly along a long, patrolled beach with calm surf for families and a reliable wave for beginner surfers. The harbour area has the SEA LIFE aquarium, dolphin cruise operators, and enough cafés and restaurants to keep you busy for a week. Groceries, pharmacies and transport are all within easy reach. Best for: first-timers, families, anyone without a car.
Maroochydore / Cotton Tree
A quieter extension south of Mooloolaba. Cotton Tree sits on the Maroochy River and has free riverside picnic spots and a well-maintained caravan park that fills fast in peak periods. Maroochydore proper has every major supermarket chain and an emerging food precinct around the new Sunshine Plaza area.
Coolum Beach
Low-key, fewer tourists, better surf. Mount Coolum rises behind the town and rewards the 1.4 km hike with views from Noosa down to Caloundra. AUD $10–20 cheaper per night than Mooloolaba equivalents for similar quality. Best for: surfers, couples wanting a quieter stay.

Eumundi Markets

Glass House Mountains
Eleven volcanic peaks rising abruptly from flat country — the most arresting landscape on the Sunshine Coast. The best walks are the Tibrogargan circuit (easy, 1 km) and Ngungun summit (45 minutes return, outstanding coast views). Free entry. Bring water and proper footwear. 40 minutes from Mooloolaba.
Learn to Surf
Mooloolaba and Coolum both have consistent, learner-friendly breaks. Group surf lessons run AUD $65–85 for 2 hours, including board and wetsuit. Most schools guarantee you’ll stand up during the lesson.
Hinterland Villages: Montville and Maleny
The Blackall Range sits 40 minutes inland and holds a string of artisan villages. Montville has galleries, a chocolate café and views over Lake Baroon. Maleny has independent bookshops, a local cheese co-op and the Maleny Botanic Gardens (AUD $29 adult). Drive the Mary Cairncross Scenic Reserve road between them for canopy-level views of the Glass House Mountains.
